  1. THE MEDIEVAL UNDERWORLD, Andrew McCall (hc/new/319 pps.)  A compelling book that deals with the seamier side of daily life and the more notorious people of the middle ages:  outlaws, brigands, homosexuals, heretics, witches, prostitutes, thieves, fraudulent beggars and vagabonds—to name a few and how the church dealt with all of them.  Incredible book!
  2. THE MAGNIFICENT CENTURY, Thomas Costain (hc/used/excellent/384 pp.) The life, reign and death of Henry III—56 years in the illustrious history of England—is detailed in panoramic context that not only highlights the history, but the background, customs, moods and peerage and people of the time.  A classic non-fiction book that reads like rip-roaring fiction by a noted author and historian.
  3. 1066 AND THE YEAR OF THE CONQUEST, David Howarth (hc/used/excellent/207 pps.)  Starting with the burial of King Edward in Westminster Abbey on January 6, 1066 and ending with the coronation of King William on Christmas Day in 1066, this detailed book follows the invasion of England by William the Conqueror—including the people, customs and daily life.  With military strategy maps, genealogical diagrams as well as a map of all the earldoms of the day and great bibliography.
  4. THE MEDIEVAL MACHINE, Jean Gimpel (hc/new/274 pps.)  This is the story of how Medieval Europe created the first industrial revolution that set Western Civilization on the road to world prominence.  The main features of this machine were the pervasive use of water power (the oil of the Medieval era); the agricultural innovations that energized the population through better nourishment; the spread of mining along with mechanized iron mills; and the appearance of modern industrial problems such as labor unrest and pollution.  This is the story of technology triumphant which climaxed with the invention of the key modern device—the mechanical clock.  Incredible reading!
  5. THE DAWN OF A NEW ERA:  1250-1453, Edward Cheney (hc/used/excellent/389 pps.)  This book signals, details and provides the backdrop for the rising importance of towns, the expansion of trade, the growth of business techniques, the alliance of kings and burghers, the development of representative institutions, the uprising s of the lower classes, the weakening of the religious influence, and the emergence of nationalism—all within the context of economic, social and daily life.  A definite keeper!
