Puritan America
|
In 1621, Puritan
America, Governor William Bradford believed that Christmas Day
celebrations were strictly for heathens and ordered the pilgrims to
work that day. Many “excused” themselves from work with the reason
that it went against their consciences. Later that day, Governor
Bradford found the workers playing stool-ball and other like sports
in the open streets. He confiscated their “sports equipment” and
ordered that no “reveling” be done in the streets at Christmas
time. His orders were to “keep it in the house but not in his
streets”! |
